Part 3: Faith Without Works is Dead

A Hard Question

In Part 2, we learned we are saved by grace through faith, not by works. This is wonderful news!

But now we face a challenging question:

James 2:14

“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?”

NKJV

Can someone claim faith while living the same way they did before? Can faith exist without producing any change?

James says no. That kind of faith cannot save.

A Powerful Example

James 2:15-17

“If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

Imagine: someone has no clothes, no food. You say, “I hope you get warm and fed,” but do nothing to help.

Your words mean nothing if you don’t act.

Same with faith. Claiming faith means nothing if that faith doesn’t produce action.

Does This Contradict Grace?

No. Here’s the key:

Works DON’T earn salvation (what Paul teaches)
Works PROVE salvation (what James teaches)

Think of it this way:

You don’t work to become a Christian
But when you become a Christian, you work

Works are not the root of faith. Works are the fruit of faith.

Faith and Works Together

James 2:24

“You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.”

NKJV

Both Paul and James are right:

Paul talks about how we GET saved (by faith)
James talks about how we PROVE we’re saved (by works)

The works don’t produce the faith. The faith produces the works.

The Body and Spirit

James 2:26

“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

NKJV

When the spirit leaves a body, that body is dead. It might look like a body, but there’s no life.

In the same way, faith without works looks like faith on the surface. But if there’s no action, there’s no life in that faith.

The Right Understanding

We are saved by grace through faith — NOT by works. Our works cannot earn God’s grace.

But genuine faith will ALWAYS produce works.

If someone claims faith but their life shows no change, no fruit, no good works, then their faith is dead. It was never genuine saving faith.

Simple:

Works don’t MAKE us Christians
Works PROVE we are Christians

Think of an apple tree. It doesn’t produce apples to become an apple tree. It produces apples because it IS an apple tree. No apples? Not really an apple tree.

Two Important Responses

First — Examine Ourselves

Is our faith producing fruit? Are we growing? Are we serving others? Are we doing good works?

If not, we need to question whether we truly have saving faith.

Second — Stop Judging Others

Remember the Grace series? God’s grace is sufficient. His strength is made perfect in weakness.

We all fall short. We all have areas where we’re still growing.

The question is not whether we’re perfect. The question is whether our faith is alive and working.

A Living Faith

Dead faith says, “I believe.” Living faith says, “I believe, so I will act.”

Dead faith sees a need and says, “Be blessed.” Living faith sees a need and says, “How can I help?”

Dead faith knows about Jesus. Living faith follows Jesus.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works. We could never earn Your salvation. But Lord, help our faith to be alive and active, producing real change in our lives.

Search our hearts, Father. Show us if we have dead faith that needs to be revived by Your Spirit. Help us move from words to action, from belief to obedience.

When we see someone in need, help us to be like Jesus — not just speaking blessings, but meeting needs. Let our faith show itself through love in action.

Father, help us to examine our own lives instead of judging others. We are all recipients of Your grace. We all need Your patience.

We don’t want dead faith that only exists in words. We want living faith that moves, works, serves, and loves. Make our faith genuine, alive, and working through love.
