What Faith Can Do

We’ve learned what faith is, how it receives grace, and that genuine faith produces works. Now let’s discover how to live by faith in practical, powerful ways.

Faith Moves Mountains

Matthew 17:20

“So Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.’”

NKJV

You don’t need great faith. You need genuine faith the size of a tiny mustard seed.

Think of it this way:

Great faith in nothing = nothing
Small faith in God = everything

When you have even small but real faith, nothing is impossible.

The problem? Unbelief. But when we truly trust Him — even a little — He can do impossible things through us.

How to Ask in Faith

James 1:6

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”

NKJV

When we pray, we must ask in faith without doubting.

A doubting person is unstable — tossed like ocean waves. Will God answer? Is God good? Can God be trusted?

This doesn’t mean we can never have questions. It means when we pray, we pray with confidence that God hears us and will answer according to His perfect will.

Have Faith in God

Mark 11:22-24

“So Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, “Be removed and be cast into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.’”

Notice where Jesus starts: “Have faith in God.”

Not faith in faith. Not faith in our ability to believe strongly. Faith in God Himself.

When we know God’s character — His love, His power, His faithfulness — we can pray with confidence.

Faith in Action — Meeting Needs

Faith in action means seeing needs and meeting them. When someone is hungry, we feed them. When someone is hurting, we comfort them. This is what living faith looks like.

We trust God enough to be generous, serve sacrificially, and love others the way Christ loved us.

The Bridge to Hope

As we close this series, understand the beautiful connection between faith and hope.

Remember from Part 1: Faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith and hope work together:

Hope looks to the future with expectation
Faith gives that hope substance in the present

Think of it this way:

Without hope, faith has no direction
Without faith, hope has no substance

When we live by faith, we’re not just acting on what we see today. We’re acting based on what we hope for tomorrow.

We serve others because we hope in the coming Kingdom. We endure trials because we hope in eternal glory. We remain faithful because we hope in Christ’s return.

Faith gives substance to our hope. Hope gives direction to our faith.

In our next series, we’ll explore hope more deeply — the confident expectation that makes our faith so powerful and our actions so purposeful.

Living It Out Today

How do we live by faith in action today?

We trust God’s promises. We pray without doubting. We meet the needs we see. We step out in obedience. We believe God can do the impossible.

Faith in action moves, works, serves, prays, believes, and obeys. And as it does, it keeps looking forward to the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for teaching us about living faith. Help us to have faith in You that moves mountains. Remove our doubts and increase our trust in Your character and promises. You are good, powerful, and faithful.

When we pray, help us to pray with confidence. Teach us to believe that You hear us and will answer according to Your perfect will.

Father, show us practical ways to put our faith into action today. Open our eyes to see the needs around us. Give us hearts willing to meet those needs.

Thank You that we don’t need great faith — just genuine faith, even as small as a mustard seed. With You, nothing is impossible.

Lord, as we live by faith, keep our hope fixed on You and Your promises. Help our faith to give substance to our hope. Help our hope to give direction to our faith.

Thank You that faith receives grace, produces works, and leads to hope. All glory belongs to You.
