Part 1: The I AM Statements of Jesus

Reference and studybook: the Bible.

Method: For each topic, the relevant Bible verses are shown with their immediate context. Definitions, distinctions, and connections come only from what the text itself says. No Rabbinical traditions, no extra-biblical claims, no commentary beyond what Scripture itself provides.

A Note on Sequence

The order below is a teaching sequence, not a ranking. In the lived Christian life, many of these topics operate simultaneously, on the same plane — like layers of a spiral cake. For example:

  • Humility, Repentance, and Faith often happen together in a moment of conversion
  • Faith, Hope, and Love abide together (1 Cor 13:13) — none expires when the next begins
  • Joy, Peace, and Patience grow simultaneously as fruit of the same Spirit (Gal 5:22)

The sequence helps us teach one concept at a time. The reality is that they form a living, interconnected whole — held together in Christ.

The “I AM” Statements of Jesus

Before listing the twenty branches, the foundation must be Christ Himself — not as an abstract idea, but as He declares Himself in His own words. The Gospel of John records seven “I AM” statements with a predicate (each describing what Jesus is to us), plus several absolute “I AM” statements that echo God’s self-revelation to Moses in Exodus 3:14 (“I AM WHO I AM”).

These declarations are the proper anchor of every topic that follows. Every concept in this study connects to Christ — and Christ is known by who He says He is.

The Seven Predicate “I AM” Statements (in John)

1. I am the bread of life.

John 6:35

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:48

“I am that bread of life.”

“I am the bread of life.”

John 6:51

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

“I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

2. I am the light of the world.

John 8:12

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

“Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 9:5

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

“While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

3. I am the door.

John 10:7

“Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.”

“Jesus therefore said to them again, ‘Most certainly, I tell you, I am the sheep’s door.”

John 10:9

“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

“I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out and will find pasture.”

4. I am the good shepherd.

John 10:11

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

John 10:14

“I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.”

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own.”

5. I am the resurrection and the life.

John 11:25-26

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

6. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

John 14:6

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.”

7. I am the true vine.

John 15:1

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.”

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.”

John 15:5

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

“I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

The Absolute “I AM” Statements (echoing Exodus 3:14)

John 8:58

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”

“Jesus said to them, ‘Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.”

John 8:25

“Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.”

“They said therefore to him, ‘Who are you?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.”

With the same self-declaration in 8:24, 8:28.

John 18:5-6

“They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.”

“They answered him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am he.’ Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When therefore he said to them, ‘I am he,’ they went backward and fell to the ground.”

At His arrest.

John 4:26

“Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.”

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am he, the one who speaks to you.”

What Scripture says

  • Jesus declares Himself in seven specific images, each meeting a particular need: hunger (Bread), darkness (Light), exclusion (Door), abandonment (Shepherd), death (Resurrection), confusion (Way/Truth/Life), and barrenness (Vine).
  • The absolute “I AM” statements (without predicate) tie Jesus directly to the divine Name revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:14).
  • “Before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58) is a direct claim to eternal divine existence — and the response was that the Jews “took up stones to throw at Him” (John 8:59), recognizing the claim.
  • The seven predicate “I AMs” in John frame this entire study: Christ is what every branch needs, and every branch abides in Him.

Connections to the topics that follow

  • The Vine (John 15:1, 5) anchors the entire structure — every topic is a branch abiding in Him; without Him, nothing can be done.
  • The Door (John 10:9) is referenced at Jesus, Forgiveness (entry through His blood), and Knock.
  • The Way, the Truth, the Life (John 14:6) anchors Jesus and Truth.
  • The Light of the World (John 8:12) illumines Truth — those who follow Him do not walk in darkness.
  • The Bread of Life (John 6:35) speaks to Ask — He satisfies the deepest hunger when we come to Him.
  • The Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14) gives context to Seek and Knock — He knows His sheep, and they know His voice.
  • The Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25) grounds Hope — the resurrection of Christ is the source of our living hope (1 Pet 1:3).

The Working Sequence

The Center (always, in everything):

God moves first (His nature toward us):

  • God’s Love — the source
  • Mercy — withholds deserved judgment
  • Grace — gives the undeserved gift
  • Truth — paired with grace in Christ

Our turning toward Him (in humility):

The ongoing posture of the disciple:

Fruit and life of the Spirit-filled disciple:

  • Obedience — love expressed
  • Works — faith proven
  • Peace — fruit of justification and of the Spirit
  • Joy — fruit of the Spirit
  • Patience — produced by tested faith
  • Wisdom — given when asked, from above

The eternal three that abide:

  • Hope — confident expectation, anchor of the soul
  • Our Love — the greatest, the goal, the fulfillment

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the bread of life, the light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth and the life, and the true vine. Thank You for telling us plainly who You are.

As we begin this study, keep us close to You. Let every truth we read lead us back to You, for without You we can do nothing.

In Your name we pray, Amen.
