Part 23: What Scripture Itself Reveals
Pattern 1 — Christ as the Vine; every branch abides in Him
Every topic connects to Jesus directly, by Scripture’s own words. He declares Himself in seven “I AM” predicates:
The Seven “I AM” Statements (John):
- The Bread of Life (John 6:35) — He satisfies the deepest hunger
- The Light of the World (John 8:12) — those who follow Him do not walk in darkness
- The Door (John 10:9) — entering by Him is the only way of salvation
- The Good Shepherd (John 10:11) — He lays down His life for the sheep
- The Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25) — those who believe in Him shall live
- The Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6) — no one comes to the Father except through Him
- The True Vine (John 15:5) — without Him we can do nothing
Plus the absolute “I AM” claims to the divine Name (John 8:58; 18:5-6).
Each branch abides in Him:
- The Vine sustains every branch (John 15:5) — every topic in this study abides in Christ
- Grace and Truth came through Him (John 1:17)
- Forgiveness through His blood (Eph 1:7)
- Faith centers on Him (Gal 2:20)
- Love manifested in Him being sent (1 John 4:9)
- He is the example of Humility and Obedience (Phil 2:5-8)
- He is our Peace (Eph 2:14), our Hope (Col 1:27), our Wisdom (1 Cor 1:30)
- He is the resurrection — and the source of our living hope (1 Pet 1:3)
Pattern 2 — God’s love is the source; God’s initiative comes first
Scripture consistently shows God moving toward us before we move toward Him:
- “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19)
- “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8)
- “The goodness of God leads you to repentance” (Rom 2:4)
- “Not by works… but according to His mercy He saved us” (Titus 3:5)
- “Rich in mercy, because of His great love” (Eph 2:4)
- “By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8)
This places God’s Love → Mercy → Grace → Truth before our response.
Pattern 3 — Repentance and Faith are paired at the entry, in humility
- “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15)
- “Repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21)
- “Repent… for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38)
- “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6)
Pattern 4 — The Holy Spirit is the agent producing the fruit
- Love (Rom 5:5; Gal 5:22)
- Joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Gal 5:22-23)
- Hope (Rom 15:13)
- Truth (John 16:13)
- Wisdom (Eph 1:17)
- Mercy / regeneration (Titus 3:5)
Pattern 5 — Faith, Hope, Love abide
“Now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor 13:13). These three are not just stages in a sequence — they are the abiding triad of the Christian life.
Pattern 6 — Romans 5:1-5 gives Scripture’s own explicit chain
The clearest single sequence Scripture itself provides:
Justified by Faith → Peace with God → Access to Grace → Rejoice in Hope → Tribulation → Perseverance (Patience) → Character → Hope → Love poured out by the Holy Spirit
(Romans 5:1-5)
This chain alone touches: Faith, Peace, Grace, Hope, Patience, Hope (again), Love, Holy Spirit.
Pattern 7 — Love bookends everything
- Beginning: God’s love is the source — He sent His Son because He loved (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9-10)
- End: Our love is the fulfillment — the greatest commandment, the fulfillment of the law, the greatest of the abiding three (Matt 22:37-40; Rom 13:10; 1 Cor 13:13)
- We love only because He first loved us (1 John 4:19)
This explains why Love appears as both God’s Love and Our Love.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that Your word holds together. From Your love at the beginning to our love at the end, every part points to Your Son.
Thank You that You moved toward us first. Keep us abiding in Christ, and let faith, hope and love remain in us.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
